MUNARI
LIGHT AT PLAY
Painter and designer Bruno Munari (1907-1998) was one of the key figures in the Op Art movement in Italy. The poetic inventor of Useless Machines and Illegible Books, a graphic designer for Campari, and the creator of the «chair for short visits,» Munari also designed numerous educational and construction games. These games were presented and sold in cardboard boxes and book-boxes, accompanied by illustrated instruction booklets.
These Prelibri and other MC1 boxes, which have become absolute icons of educational design, inspired the German designer Lutz Pankow and DCWéditions to package and deliver the Munari lighting system. This system is a sort of cosmic Spirograph, satellite-like planets of light mounted on a supporting and conductive structure. This set of luminous atoms orbits at a distance of five meters, and to set it up, one simply follows the assembly instructions contained in the flat cardboard box, clearly referencing Munari’s games.
